A fellow member of a sports shooting club said Sunday that the 24-year-old who killed six people in central Krakow on Saturday appeared highly skilled in military-style marksmanship, Reuters reported1.

Adam Chyb, 55, a longtime member of the Swit Starachowice club about 175 kilometers (109 miles) northeast of Krakow, told Reuters he would not know how to shoot in that way1. Chyb described sports shooting as distinct from firing while moving, running or driving, including steering with one hand and firing an AR-style rifle with the other, according to the report1.

Chyb said that kind of shooting, including recoil and blast inside a vehicle, is taught by the military and police, not by his club1. He said the gunman, who has not been officially named, joined Swit Starachowice in 2022, attended only a handful of times including twice this year, and always came with his father, a longtime member1. Chyb said the man never arrived in military uniform and showed no negative behavior that would have been noticed1.

The gunman was from Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski in southeastern Poland1. Authorities said his family, including the assailant, had licenses for 11 firearms, Reuters reported, adding that gun ownership in Poland is relatively low but has risen since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine1. Bodies of his father, mother and sister were found at the family home Saturday, and officials said they were also likely killed by the same person1.

The government said the assailant may have been inspired by far-right ideology, without further detail; nationalist opposition politicians disputed that, according to Reuters1.
