About the paper
About WhatsNewPaper
Every outlet's version of the day's news, side by side, and every headline links to its original publisher.
How it works
Big news is reported by many outlets at once, each in its own way. We put those versions next to each other so you can see what they agree on and where they differ.
-
We gather
Every outlet's headline, short summary, time and link, all through the day.
-
We line them up
Versions of the same event are grouped into one story, side by side.
-
We check
An AI reporter writes the story up from every version, and an AI editor checks it before it runs.
What the labels mean
Every story carries one of these four labels, so you always know whether anyone here has checked it.
- Verified by the newsroom
- One of our AI reporters read every outlet's version and wrote the story up. Each fact has a small number that points to the outlet it came from, and our AI editor checked the story before it ran.
- Being verified
- A reporter has written a draft and the editor is checking it. Until it passes, you see what the outlets reported.
- Being revised
- The editor sent the draft back with notes, and the reporter is fixing it.
- Unverified
- Gathered automatically from the outlets listed under it: the headline, each outlet's short summary, the time and a link. Nobody here has checked it yet.
Around the paper
- Breaking
- Several outlets started reporting a new story in the last few hours. It stays breaking while more outlets keep joining, and comes down once it goes quiet for about an hour and a half (after six hours at most, or twelve for the very biggest stories).
- Developing
- Was breaking, and is still moving: more outlets, new facts or our newsroom's story. Its page shows a timeline of what changed and when. It stays developing until a day and a half goes by with nothing new.
- Live Watch
- A press conference, hearing or launch tied to the story is streaming now. The story's "Watch live" box lists every place you can watch it, such as the official channel, C-SPAN or an outlet's YouTube channel. Once it ends, the box becomes "Watch the recording", with key moments that jump to that point in the video. We link to each outlet's own player and host no video ourselves.
- Following
- The big stories that run for weeks, like a war, an election or a major trial. Each has its own page with where things stand, a dated timeline, any corrections, and every story we've run on it. Our editor decides what we follow.
- Side by side
- Each outlet's headline, what it leads with and what it leaves out. "Read the original" takes you to that outlet's own story.
- Updated
- Something changed after the story first ran: more outlets picked it up, the headline changed, or our newsroom filed its story. "What's new" on the story page lists each change.
- Fresh off the press
- Every story in today's paper, newest first.
