Sony stops shipping last standalone 4K Blu-ray player in Japan

Sony has stopped shipping the UBP-X700/K, its last standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player in Japan, TechPowerUp reported Friday, citing retailer Kunkoku1.

Shipments ended Oct. 22, and remaining stock on Sony's Japanese store sold out almost immediately, according to that account1. No successor was announced1. The UBP-X700/K launched May 17, 2025, as a version of the 2018 UBP-X700 without streaming apps, and was last listed at 58,300 yen1.

That leaves the disc-equipped PlayStation 5 as the only Sony product in Japan that can still play 4K Blu-ray movies, TechPowerUp said1. The console supports 4K Blu-ray with HDR10 but not Dolby Vision, which the discontinued player offered1. Sony will keep selling the BDP-S1700/K, which plays standard Blu-ray discs only1.

Sony announced in February that it would phase out its Blu-ray recorders in Japan with no successors, the report said1. TechPowerUp said the player exit appears limited to Japan for now, with the UBP-X700U still listed on Sony's U.S. store1. The site also noted Sony's earlier plan to stop shipping new PlayStation games on disc from January 2028 and that it has not confirmed a disc drive on a future PlayStation console1.
