San Juan County, Utah, issued an Extreme local-area emergency for Montezuma Creek and Aneth on Sunday morning, telling residents to leave because of San Juan River flooding, according to the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System record1.

The wireless text said flooding was occurring in the Montezuma Creek and Aneth area and instructed people to evacuate to Aneth School1. IPAWS listed the sender as UT San Juan County, with urgency Immediate, certainty Observed and a response of Evacuate1. The alert was sent at 7:00 a.m. EDT and was scheduled to expire at 11:00 a.m. EDT1.

FOX 13 reported that the Navajo Nation Department of Emergency Management issued a notice of evacuation late Saturday for Bluff, Montezuma Creek and Aneth because of expected high water on the San Juan River2. The station said about 150 people were expected to leave overnight from Montezuma Creek and Aneth and that a shelter was set up at Aneth Community School at 162 San Juan County Road 466 in Montezuma Creek2.

FOX 13 said officials told residents to plan to be away for multiple days and to bring medications, identification, documents, hygiene items, clothes, bedding and phone chargers2. The station also said flooding earlier in the week had damaged homes and roads in the Navajo Nation after storms moved across Utah2.

The county wireless alert did not list a head count, the Bluff community, or how long people should stay away1. Independent confirmation of injuries, property losses or whether the Sunday morning evacuation was completed was not in those two records1,2.
