Remnants of Cyclone Murasu brought extremely heavy rain to parts of Telangana on Nov. 4, a day after the severe cyclonic storm crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast near Ongole, according to The Hindu and the India Meteorological Department1,2,4.

Telangana Development Planning Society gauges cited by The Hindu showed 235 mm at Mulakapalle in Bhadradri Kothagudem and 204.7 mm at Vemsoor in Khammam overnight into Wednesday1. IMD-Hyderabad placed Bhadradri Kothagudem under an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain on Nov. 4, with moderate to heavy rain in Mulugu and Khammam1.

The Hindu, citing IMD, said Murasu weakened into a deep depression around 11 p.m. on Nov. 3 and into a depression around 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 4, then lay about 10 km southwest of Khammam2. In Andhra Pradesh, Edlapadu in Palnadu recorded 269.45 mm in the 24 hours to 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, the highest in the state, with 16 gauges above the 204.5 mm extremely heavy threshold2.

IMD and multiple outlets said the storm crossed between Nellore and Narasapur, near Ongole, in the early hours of Tuesday, with sustained winds of about 100-110 kmph and gusts to 120 kmph5,7. Al Jazeera, citing IMD, put the start of landfall near Ongole at about 1 a.m. Tuesday4. Hindustan Times and Times of India used the 3:30-5:30 a.m. crossing window5,7.

Accounts of casualties changed as the day went on. Al Jazeera quoted APSDMA managing director Prakhar Jain, via Reuters, saying no deaths or injuries had been reported around landfall4. The Hindu's Nov. 3 live file later quoted Jain telling PTI that at least two people died in cyclone-related incidents in Andhra Pradesh and that 12,230 people were in rehabilitation centres8. DW's earlier blog did not report deaths3.

Al Jazeera said Jain had planned to move about 30,000 people, and that the storm followed Cyclone Arnab in the same region4. Hindustan Times said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who said NDRF and SDRF teams were operating in the state5. Times of India listed early coastal totals, including 16.4 cm at Kothapatnam, and a 1.0-1.5 metre storm-surge forecast7.

What remains unsettled in this set of reports includes a consolidated death and injury tally after the later APSDMA statement, full crop-loss figures beyond early hectare estimates in other Hindu copy, and how long heavy rain will persist over east Telangana as the depression moves inland1,2,4.
