Apple introduces 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 chip, from $1,999
Apple said Tuesday the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, starts at $1,999, with pre-orders Oct. 28 and availability Nov. 6.
- Engadget is now reporting this
Apple on Tuesday announced a new 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the M6 chip, with pre-orders starting Wednesday, Oct. 28, and availability beginning Friday, Nov. 61.
The company said M6 has a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, two more cores in each than before, plus a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators in the GPU1. Unified memory starts at 16GB and is configurable up to 32GB, with memory bandwidth up to 170GB/s1.
Compared with M5, Apple said the GPU is up to 30 percent faster and on-device AI workloads up to 25 percent faster1. Versus the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1, it cited up to 11 times faster graphics and up to 13 times faster AI performance, including faster first-token times for local language-model prompts1.
Battery life is listed at up to 24 hours, which Apple called the longest ever in a Mac1. Wireless radios are Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6; wired ports include HDMI, MagSafe 3, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack, with support for up to two external displays1.
The Liquid Retina XDR display is specified at up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, with an optional nano-texture finish1. Other hardware includes a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, a three-microphone array and a six-speaker system1. Fast charging is said to reach up to 50 percent in 30 minutes with a compatible higher-wattage USB-C adapter such as the 96W unit1.
The laptop ships with macOS 27, which Apple said includes Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features across apps1. Colors are space black and silver1. U.S. pricing starts at $1,999, or $1,899 with education savings1.
Apple said the product is made with 45 percent recycled content overall, including 100 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure, 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 100 percent recycled tantalum in multiple capacitors, described as a first for the company1. Manufacturing is listed at 60 percent renewable electricity across the supply chain1.
Shelly Goldberg, Apple's vice president of Hardware Engineering, said the M6 chip takes performance to the next level with a boost in CPU speed, graphics and on-device AI1. Independent tests of the claimed speedups were not in the release1.
