KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s United Malays National Organisation said Friday it had paid a 50 million ringgit (about US$12.3 million) fine imposed on former Prime Minister Najib Razak, a remaining condition of a royal pardon that would allow him to serve the rest of his prison term under house arrest2,5.

UMNO secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the Najib Razak Solidarity Fund, launched Sept. 18, had reached its target and that the party completed payment procedures with the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Friday morning2,5.

“UMNO completed all payment procedures with the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning,” Asyraf said in a statement reported by CNA2.

The party said it had closed the special account set up for public contributions and no longer needed crowdfunding for the fine2,5. Malay Mail reported that the statement did not disclose the total collected5.

Najib, 73, has been held at Kajang Prison since Aug. 23, 2022, after Malaysia’s Federal Court upheld his conviction over the misappropriation of 42 million ringgit from SRC International Sdn Bhd5.

His original sentence of 12 years in prison and a 210 million ringgit fine was reduced in January 2024 to six years and 50 million ringgit5. On Sept. 18, King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar granted a conditional pardon allowing the remainder of the term — until Aug. 23, 2028 — to be served at home if the fine and other conditions are met2,5.

CNA cited Malaysian media reports that Najib could leave prison Friday after police were seen near his Langgak Duta residence in Kuala Lumpur, the property local reports have identified as the likely house-arrest site2. Malay Mail did not report a confirmed transfer time5.

CNA reported that Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, told reporters earlier Friday that she and her family had not been informed of any payment, according to Free Malaysia Today2.
