Instagram launches Edits for Mac as a CapCut rival
Instagram said Thursday it released a macOS version of its Edits video app, adding a multi-track desktop editor and optional AI-agent hooks, according to TechCrunch, The Verge and Engadget.
- New headline Was: “Instagram brings Edits to desktop to take on CapCut”
- Our desk filed its story
Instagram on Thursday released a Mac version of Edits, its standalone short-form video editor, saying the larger screen, mouse and keyboard are meant for projects that outgrow a phone1,3.
TechCrunch, The Verge and Engadget all described the same core product: a desktop editor with a multi-track timeline, licensed audio, effects and a path to post straight to Instagram1,2,3.
The launch puts Edits closer to ByteDance's CapCut, which TechCrunch said has had Windows and Mac desktop apps since 2021 and remains a common tool for TikTok creators1,3.
Edits launched on mobile last year1,2,3. Engadget reported that Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said on the company's most recent earnings call that Edits has more than 50 million active users3.
Brett Westervelt, head of Edits, said in a company blog post quoted by TechCrunch that creators' work is growing and "your tools should grow with it"1.
Instagram said the Mac app includes licensed and royalty-free music, sound and video effects, automatic captions in multiple languages, keyframes, audio waveforms, custom fonts and keyboard shortcuts that can be imported from other editors1,2,3.
Creators can publish from the desktop editor to Instagram with tagging and location, and export watermark-free video in 4K in horizontal or vertical formats, according to Instagram as reported by TechCrunch and Engadget1,3.
The Verge, citing an interview with Matthew Simari, Instagram's head of product management for Edits, said the desktop app also exposes its tools through the Model Context Protocol so users can connect Meta's Muse agent or another agent of their choice2.
Simari said users can move between agent-driven and manual editing, including asking an agent to assemble a rough cut from files on the Mac and then opening the project in Edits2. Instagram added an AI creative assistant to the mobile app in September, The Verge reported2.
TechCrunch and Engadget did not describe the MCP or third-party agent hooks in the stories reviewed1,3. The Verge said the app is not available on Windows or Linux2.
All three outlets reported that editing the same project on phone and Mac is not ready; Instagram said it is working on that and plans weekly desktop updates1,2,3.
