Columbus police name teen suspects in two separate homicide cases

10TV said detectives named a 16-year-old wanted in an Oct. 30 southwest Columbus killing; NBC4 Columbus said a 17-year-old was arrested Thursday in a May northeast Columbus shooting.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus detectives on Thursday identified a 16-year-old as a wanted suspect in an Oct. 30 southwest-side homicide, 10TV reported, while NBC4 Columbus said a 17-year-old was arrested the same day as a second suspect in a separate May shooting in the northeast1,2.

10TV, citing the Columbus Division of Police, said Jaycier Armstrong is wanted on charges of murder, aggravated robbery and felonious assault in the death of 18-year-old Aaliyah Chan1.

Officers were called to the 1000 block of Hardesty Place West near Eakin Road about 8 p.m. Oct. 30 on a report of a shooting, 10TV reported1.

Police found one person with a gunshot wound outside, then learned a second person had been shot in a basement apartment, where Chan was pronounced dead shortly before 8 p.m., 10TV said1.

A third person went to a nearby hospital and was treated and released, and detectives said they believe an attempted robbery preceded the shooting, according to 10TV1.

NBC4 Columbus reported a different case: on May 20, officers found 22-year-old Samir Mayes with a gunshot wound in the 4100 block of Migration Lane in the Strawberry Farms area; he died at a hospital at 4:55 a.m., and a woman had a minor arm injury2.

Police told NBC4 that multiple people were trying to steal a vehicle parked outside a home when two people came onto a second-floor balcony and Cross began shooting before leaving2.

NBC4 said Amari Cross, 19, was arrested Oct. 26 and charged with murder, and that a 17-year-old later identified as a second suspect was arrested Thursday, interviewed at police headquarters and taken to the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center2.

The 10TV account said the southwest-side homicide remained under investigation by the homicide unit1. Neither station described the two cases as connected1,2.
