GitHub says monthly commits hit 7.4 billion as it adds capacity
The New Stack reports GitHub said at Universe it now sees 7.4 billion commits a month, up from 2.9 billion in August, and is adding CPU, storage and network capacity.

GitHub said at its Universe conference on Wednesday that the platform now sees 7.4 billion commits per month, according to The New Stack1.
The New Stack reported that GitHub had said in August it was seeing 2.9 billion commits per month, up from 1.4 billion in April, and that developers pushed 65 million monthly commits to the platform in 20241.
The outlet said GitHub attributed the surge mainly to agentic demand and noted that outages have become a recurring theme as usage grew1.
In August, GitHub CTO Vlad Fedorov said the platform had added 3 million CPU cores, mostly on Azure, The New Stack reported1. GitHub now says it will add another 4 million CPU cores, 160 petabytes of high-speed storage, more compute for GitHub Actions, and 50 terabits per second of network capacity1.
GitHub also reiterated plans to rearchitect the platform by separating compute and storage, a shift it described earlier this month on its engineering blog1. The New Stack said GitHub's internal benchmarks show the new architecture can deliver up to 35 times higher write throughput1.
Jay Parikh, Microsoft's executive vice president for Core AI, wrote, "Agents are changing the volume and shape of software development. Adding capacity matters, but capacity alone won't get us there"1. The New Stack said moving more of GitHub onto Azure was essentially required because the company's own data center was out of capacity1.
