Economists see India's October inflation near RBI's 6% ceiling
A Reuters survey of 36 economists put India's median October consumer-price forecast at 5.93%, near the Reserve Bank of India's 6% upper bound, with official figures due Nov. 12.
Based on reporting by Reuters
A Reuters poll of 36 economists, taken Nov. 2-6, put the median forecast for India's October consumer-price inflation at 5.93%, compared with 5.54% in September, with official data scheduled for Nov. 121.
The survey's range was 5.50% to 6.60%. Almost half of those polled saw October inflation at or above 6%, the top of the Reserve Bank of India's 2% to 6% target band1.
Reuters said food prices, nearly 40% of the CPI basket, have risen after an uneven monsoon. The poll's median food-inflation forecast was 8.20%, from 7.74% in September1.
Core inflation, excluding food and fuel, was seen at 4.45%. India's statistics office does not publish an official core series, Reuters noted1.
The poll also put wholesale-price inflation at 12.10% in October, from 11.39% in September. Reuters said the RBI, which began raising rates in October, now expects inflation to average 5.2% this fiscal year, above its prior 5.0% projection1.
India's National Statistics Office said in its September CPI release that the October index would be issued on Nov. 12, 2026, or the next working day if that date is a holiday. The official October print has not been released1.
