Apple on Oct. 28 unveiled a redesigned MacBook Pro with a tandem OLED touch display, M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, and a $2,899 starting price, the company and multiple outlets reported.

Apple on Oct. 28 introduced a redesigned MacBook Pro with a tandem OLED touchscreen it calls PROLED XDR, the first Mac with a full touch display, at its Pro and Tell event in Los Angeles9,19,20.

The 14-inch model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399, with preorders described as opening Oct. 30 and shipments from Nov. 63,19,20.

Apple's product page lists 14.2-inch and 16.3-inch tandem OLED panels, M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, up to 1,000 nits sustained full-screen brightness, up to 2,000 nits peak HDR and SDR brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and ProMotion from 10 to 120 Hz9.

The company says the 14-inch configuration with M5 Pro starts at 3.0 pounds, and both sizes are thinner than the Mini-LED MacBook Pro line that remains on sale with M6, M5 Pro, or M5 Max chips and no touch9,3,18.

The Verge reported that the touch sensor is built into the panel rather than stacked on top, that Apple apps are optimized for touch, and that a new API lets developers add touch support20,22.

TechCrunch said Apple designed a stiffer hinge so the lid stays put when tapped, replaced the camera notch with a Dynamic Island cutout, and kept MagSafe, HDMI, an SDXC slot, a headphone jack, and three Thunderbolt 5 ports19.

Ars Technica wrote that launch footage showed people reaching up to a conventional clamshell, not a 2-in-1 convertible, and that the lid Apple logo glows again18.

The machines use the same M5 Pro and M5 Max generation as the previous high-end MacBook Pro rather than the M6 chip Apple put in a 14-inch MacBook Pro and 24-inch iMac a day earlier, starting at $1,999 and $1,49918,19,25,27.

A fully optioned 16-inch model with M5 Max, 128GB of memory, and 16TB of storage is listed around $14,549, outlets reported, with 16TB storage itself a $7,000 upgrade6,21,3.

CEO John Ternus told Wired the Mac is still built around trackpad and keyboard, adding there are times when touch is handy, and that Apple waited until touch would not make the laptop heavier or thicker1.

Steve Jobs in 2010 called touchscreen laptops ergonomically poor, a stance outlets noted Apple is now reversing after years of iPad-first touch products8,19,20.

What remains unclear from public pages is how macOS will treat mixed touch and pointer use in third-party apps after launch, and whether OLED burn-in protections Apple alluded to will match Mini-LED longevity18,32,9.
