Goldman Sachs limits Claude Code and GitHub to engineers

State of AI, citing Bloomberg, says Goldman Sachs restricted Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub to engineers after an October review of productivity and risk.

Goldman Sachs restricted Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub to the bank's engineers under internal guidance updated in October, State of AI reported Sunday, citing Bloomberg News1.

The change followed a review of productivity and risk concerns, according to that Bloomberg reporting as relayed by State of AI1. Most traders and bankers can no longer use the coding tools at work1.

People known as strats, who work across trading, quantitative research and software engineering, still have access, a second person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg, State of AI said1. Some traders have been frustrated, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg1.

Traders had used the tools to monitor client trading flows, model market moves and positions, and produce written and graphic material, according to that account1. Goldman spokesperson Nick Carcaterra said the bank makes certain AI tools available to staff "to determine the best use cases" across the firm1.

As recently as July, chief information officer Marco Argenti told Bloomberg that traders and bankers had built tools with AI and passed them to the firm's engineers, of whom there are about 12,000, to be improved, State of AI said1. At a conference in Turin last month, Argenti said developers, more than 12,000 of roughly 47,000 staff, had made up the first wave of Goldman's AI adoption1.

In April, Goldman removed Claude from its internal AI platform for bankers in Hong Kong, State of AI said, citing earlier Financial Times reporting that the bank had read its Anthropic contract strictly1. The firm's in-house AI assistant, which uses models from several companies, remains available across Goldman; the new limit applies to third-party agents that can write and run code, State of AI said1.

State of AI said Goldman and Morgan Stanley are lead underwriters on Anthropic's IPO according to an S-1 filed Oct. 26, and that Anthropic is expected to list on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT before the end of November1. Those IPO details were not independently reviewed for this filing1.
