U.S. real gross domestic product increased at a 3.4 percent annual rate in the third quarter, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said Thursday in its advance estimate, after a 2.2 percent increase in the second quarter1.
BEA said the contributors were increases in investment, consumer spending and government spending, partly offset by a decrease in exports, while imports rose1. Compared with the second quarter, it said the acceleration primarily reflected faster investment and an upturn in government spending, partly offset by a downturn in exports1.
Real final sales to private domestic purchasers rose 4.9 percent in the third quarter, after 4.6 percent in the second, BEA said1. The PCE price index in the GDP accounts rose 2.1 percent in the quarter, after 5.0 percent, and core PCE prices rose 2.5 percent, after 3.3 percent1.
A separate BEA report said current-dollar personal consumption expenditures increased 0.5 percent in September2. The PCE price index rose 0.5 percent on the month and 3.6 percent from a year earlier; excluding food and energy, PCE prices rose 0.3 percent on the month and 3.1 percent over 12 months2. Personal income rose 0.2 percent; the personal saving rate was 3.8 percent2.
CNBC said the GDP reading beat a 3.1 percent estimate and that consumer spending rose 3.8 percent in the quarter4. It put gross private domestic investment up 19.4 percent, with equipment spending up 20.9 percent and intellectual-property products up 8.4 percent4.
BEA's technical notes said the investment increase primarily reflected private inventory investment and equipment, with equipment led by information-processing equipment, mainly computers and peripheral equipment1.
The New York Times reported the same 3.4 percent GDP figure and described household spending and living costs as a political issue ahead of next week's midterm elections3.
CNBC said the Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate in a 3.75 percent to 4 percent range on Wednesday4. It also said initial jobless claims were 194,000 for the week ending Oct. 244.
Thursday's GDP figures are an advance estimate1. BEA said a second estimate is due Nov. 251.
