SpaceX raises 2027 data-center target to about 13 GW, SemiAnalysis says

SemiAnalysis said SpaceX has lifted its 2027 data-center capacity target to about 13 gigawatts and that the firm has already identified more than 9 GW of sites, with 3.6 GW under construction.

Research firm SemiAnalysis said SpaceX has raised its 2027 data-center capacity target to about 13 gigawatts, a figure Techmeme highlighted Wednesday from a new SemiAnalysis note1.

Two months after defending a 10 GW plan that skeptics called impossible, SemiAnalysis said it now sees 3.6 GW under construction across existing and new sites and has identified more than 9 GW of capacity in total1.

The analysts wrote that matching Google's 1999-2026 data-center capacity in about 1.5 years would be the largest amount any one company has built in that span1. They said they now believe SpaceX may be the fastest data-center builder in the world, including versus Chinese peers1.

SemiAnalysis tied the timeline to Elon Musk's earlier "10GW in 2027" remark on SpaceX's first earnings call and to supply-chain orders it tracked for 2027, including Nvidia Vera Rubin-class systems1.

At the Colossus 2 complex, it said an expansion known as MiniHard finished in about five months, while a greenfield site called Gun Range on a former police training plot in Southaven, Mississippi, is targeting about four months1. "To our knowledge, this would be the fastest greenfield datacenter ever built at scale," the firm said1.

SpaceX is also converting parts of its Starbase rocket campus in Texas for two data centers that SemiAnalysis said could exceed 1 GW, with ground-clearing in August giving way to simultaneous frames and roofs by September1. The note said Colossus 2 is installing about 5.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage, which it described as among the largest such fields in the United States1.

Power remains the constraint the analysts flagged most clearly. Their energy tracking shows more than 8 GW of likely generation under Musk-related management versus more than 9 GW of data-center load coming online, with sites sometimes identifying power mid-build1. At Colossus 2 they estimated a possible shortfall exceeding 300 megawatts after turbine limits, a planned grid hookup, and battery storage, saying efficient design and mixed internal versus customer workloads could close the gap if their IT-load assumptions are right1.

SemiAnalysis also said with medium-high confidence that SpaceX's planned TeraFab chip-fab project in Texas may include a data center, based on local filings and preconstruction work, and that some capacity could be rented to third parties1. SpaceX did not issue a public reply in the material Techmeme linked1.
