Three people were killed Thursday afternoon when two helicopters collided in midair near McMinnville Municipal Airport in Oregon and crashed in a farm field, Yamhill County Sheriff Sam Elliott said2,7,8,11.

Elliott said the collision occurred about 2:15 p.m. local time near Highway 233 and Southeast Cruickshank Road, southeast of McMinnville and about a mile west of Dayton, closing both directions of the highway2,7. ABC News, citing the sheriff's office, put the time at about 2:10 p.m. and described the intersection as Highway 33 and Cruickshank Road11.

The sheriff identified the aircraft as a 1995 Robinson R22 and a 2018 Airbus H125, also referred to as an AS350B32,11. He said two people were aboard the Robinson and one aboard the Airbus, reversing an earlier FAA spokesperson's occupant count2,11.

Killed aboard the Airbus, Elliott said, was Tyler Delane Sturdevant, 38, a pilot from Newberg, Oregon2,8,11. Aboard the Robinson were Maddie Aasbo, 22, a flight instructor from Texas, and a 31-year-old student pilot from the United Kingdom who had not been publicly identified while authorities worked with the British consulate and the FBI on family notification2,8,11.

McMinnville-based Jerry Trimble Helicopters said one of its aircraft was involved and that it was cooperating with local agencies, the FAA and the NTSB2,8. Precision, a private helicopter contractor, said one of its aircraft was involved and that Sturdevant, one of its pilots, was killed2.

The FAA and NTSB responded; the sheriff and the FAA said the NTSB is leading the investigation2,8,11. The cause was not immediately known8.
