OpenAI to merge ChatGPT Chat and Work tabs in desktop app

TechCrunch, citing an OpenAI user email, said ChatGPT's Chat and Work tabs will merge on desktop, first for select users; Codex stays separate and will share one token pool.

OpenAI told users it plans to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT on the desktop app, starting with a limited group before a wider release, TechCrunch reported, citing an email from the company1.

TechCrunch said the ChatGPT desktop app currently splits ChatGPT and Codex, and that ChatGPT itself has separate Chat and Work tabs1. OpenAI described the merge as a way to keep exploration and follow-through in one place, including files, plugins, building a website, creating a presentation, or acting on the web while a user reviews the work1. Codex will stay a separate experience in the same desktop app, the email said, according to TechCrunch1.

"This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place," the OpenAI email said, as quoted by TechCrunch1.

OpenAI also said ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool after the change1. TechCrunch reported the company said that will not affect most users, though some people may wait for usage resets more often depending on usage and model1. Anthropic combined Claude chat and Cowork on one screen in September, TechCrunch noted1. Techmeme listed the TechCrunch report.
