The European Parliament on Thursday awarded its 2026 Sakharov Prize to the International Criminal Court, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced in Strasbourg1,2.

Metsola said the prize recognizes the court's work in upholding international law and justice and that the EU is built on respect for multilateralism and international institutions1,2.

ICC President Tomoko Akane said the award comes as the court and its officials face unprecedented challenges, including sanctions aimed at disrupting its judicial mandate1. The United States under President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on the court; Washington has described the ICC as politically biased1,2.

The ICC, based in The Hague and established in 2002, prosecutes genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes1. It has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza, a step the United States has opposed1.

Other finalists were Tanzanian lawyer Tundu Lissu and Iranian sisters Taraneh and Romina Rahimi1. The prize ceremony is set for December1. The Sakharov Prize, created in 1988, is the Parliament's annual human-rights honor1.
