The Hacker News reported that Defused Cyber said it is seeing exploitation attempts against an unpatched flaw in the CryptoPayment Gateway WordPress plugin1.
The outlet identified the issue as CVE-2026-81648, with a CVSS score of 10.0, and said successful use could let unauthenticated users delete files on the server and extract stored wallet credentials1.
Citing the NIST National Vulnerability Database, The Hacker News said versions 1.2.1 through 1.2.2 lack an authorization check on an AJAX endpoint, allowing unauthenticated users to invoke administrative operations, including overwriting payment gateway configuration and recovering stored wallet credentials in cleartext1.
The Hacker News said those versions are the latest and that WP Scan listed no known fix1.
It said the plugin was closed on the WordPress Plugin Directory as of Aug. 28, 2026, and is no longer available for download because of an unspecified security issue1.
The Hacker News quoted Defused Cyber as saying recorded attacks came from infrastructure marketed as anonymous KYC-free VPS hosting1.
In the absence of a patch, The Hacker News said site owners are advised to remove the plugin, rotate wallet keys, and audit for suspicious changes1.
How many sites still run the plugin, whether any wallets have been drained, and whether a vendor patch is coming were not established in that account1.
