Thirteen people in nine states have been sickened by E. coli O26:H11 linked to Graziers raw milk cheese from Sierra Nevada Cheese Company of Willows, California, according to the CDC and FDA; eight were hospitalized, three developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure, and none have died4,5. The counts date from Sept. 25. The CDC says more than half of those sick are children 5 or younger, and the FDA lists cases in California, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee and Utah, with the latest illness starting Aug. 264,5.

What to throw out: any Graziers raw milk cheese, whatever its size or code. The company's notice recalls 8-ounce squares of Monterey Jack (UPC 6-87652-16400-9), Jalapeño Jack (6-87652-16403-0), Medium Cheddar (6-87652-16506-8) and Sharp Cheddar (6-87652-16507-5); a 16-ounce Medium Cheddar brick (6-87652-16501-3); 5-pound loaves of all four (items 6425, 6426, 6510 and 6511); and 40-pound cheddar blocks (items 6515 and 6516)6. It lists no lot or best-by codes because investigators have not narrowed the problem to a lot, though it says the illnesses were tied to the medium cheddar6.

The company says the cheese went nationwide through distributors, retailers and direct customers, and the FDA says it was sold in stores and online and also shipped to South Korea4,6. FDA's enforcement record so far covers only the 40-pound sharp cheddar block: 1,373 pounds in 13 lots sent to Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin, with no foreign shipments listed7. Gray News reports those 13 states as where all the recalled cheese went1.

Gray News reports that the FDA has given the recall a Class I rating, its most serious1,2,3. FDA's enforcement data, last updated Oct. 14, still lists the recall as not yet classified, and WhatsNewPaper found no FDA page confirming the rating7.

Health officials say the cheese keeps a long time, so check refrigerators and freezers, throw out any unpackaged cheese you can't identify, and clean surfaces it touched; it can also be returned for a refund4,5,6. The FDA says anyone who ate it and has symptoms of E. coli infection should contact a health care provider4. This is a news report, not medical advice.
