Microsoft recorded $10 billion in OpenAI-related revenue last quarter
TechCrunch said Microsoft’s filing showed $10 billion in revenue from OpenAI arrangements in the quarter ended Sept. 30, nearly 11% of its $92.3 billion in sales, with $7.2 billion still owed.
Microsoft said in a regulatory filing Wednesday that it recorded $10 billion in revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI, including revenue-sharing payments, in the quarter ended Sept. 301.
That figure is nearly 11% of Microsoft’s total quarterly revenue of $92.3 billion, TechCrunch reported from the filing1.
Microsoft’s fiscal year begins in July, so the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, is the first quarter of its fiscal 20271.
For the full 2026 fiscal year, revenue from OpenAI was $24.1 billion, according to the report1. At the latest quarterly pace, TechCrunch said Microsoft would pull in $40 billion a year from OpenAI-related arrangements1.
Microsoft also reported $7.2 billion in outstanding receivables from OpenAI at the end of September, up from $6 billion at the end of June, amounts OpenAI owes for previous transactions rather than additional revenue, TechCrunch said1.
It is not clear how much of the OpenAI-related revenue came from revenue-sharing payments versus Azure cloud computing services; TechCrunch said it had asked Microsoft for more detail1.
In November 2025, TechCrunch reported, citing leaked documents, that Microsoft had received $865.8 million in net revenue-sharing payments from OpenAI in the first nine months of that year1.
OpenAI has been reported to share 20% of its revenue with Microsoft under a prior deal in which Microsoft invested more than $13 billion; neither company has publicly confirmed that percentage, TechCrunch said1. Under an April 2026 agreement, OpenAI is to continue sharing revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap, even as OpenAI may work with competing cloud providers, the report said1.
The companies began loosening an exclusive partnership in October 2025, when Microsoft gave OpenAI more freedom to use other clouds and OpenAI committed to buying an additional $250 billion in Azure services, according to TechCrunch1.
Microsoft’s ownership stake in OpenAI declined slightly from about 25% in June to 24% in September, continuing a gradual drop from roughly 27% after an October 2025 recapitalization; Microsoft did not specify what caused the dilution, the report said1.
