Asahi Linux makes M3 Macs generally available, ships Fedora Remix 45
Asahi Linux said M3 Apple Silicon Macs no longer need the installer EXPERT flag, Fedora Asahi Remix 45 shipped with Fedora 45, and more drivers were sent upstream for Linux 7.3.
- asahilinux.org is now reporting this
- New headline Was: “Asahi Linux Progress Linux 7.3”
- Our desk filed its story
The Asahi Linux project said Apple's M3-series Macs are now generally available in its installer without an expert-mode flag, and that Fedora Asahi Remix 45 shipped on the same day as Fedora Linux 45, in a progress report tied to the Linux 7.3 cycle1.
The post, dated around Nov. 7 on asahilinux.org, said early adopters of M3 support had reported almost no issues after the last report put those machines behind the EXPERT installer flag1.
Asahi said it had also improved M3 support, most notably by enabling DCP, which it said brought performance and battery-life gains, sleep on M3 devices, and a usable area around the MacBook notch, with m1n1 and kernel updates coming in the following days1.
On upstreaming, the project said two large drivers reached the review list this cycle: macaudio, whose driver and Devicetree changes it put at about 3,100 lines after ALSA and amplifier-driver work, and AVD, which it said spent barely three months in the downstream tree and totals about 13,000 lines with related Devicetree changes1.
It also said initial Devicetrees for M4 Pro and Max machines, and for M5, appeared on the list, credited in part to a contributor named Yureka, and that those trees are barebones and only sufficient to boot the SoC to a TTY1.
Asahi said it had begun shifting to an upstream-first approach where practical, including changes to TI USB-PD and SPMI drivers for new devices and initial Thunderbolt support1. A separate section said Thunderbolt had been promised for 2024 and had not arrived on that timeline1.
Fedora Linux 45 was released Nov. 3, the project said, and Fedora Asahi Remix shipped the same day, which it described as the first time a new Remix version went out on the same day as upstream Fedora1.
The report also described experiments with Google's Per Process Page Size (P3S) work so some processes can use 4 KiB pages on 16 KiB hosts, which Asahi said helped some Windows games under FEX and WINE, but said it would not ship the patch while Google's upstream plans remain unclear1.
Asahi said it had begun moving its repositories to the GNU General Public License version 2 or later and that going forward its code would be licensed under strong copyleft licenses only1.
