OpenAI launches GPT-6 Cyber for authorized vulnerability research
OpenAI said Thursday it is releasing GPT-6 Cyber, a Daybreak Red model it rates Critical for cybersecurity, to a limited set of approved customers, citing higher exploit scores and tighter in-scope behavior.
- OpenAI, Techmeme and CNA are now reporting this
- New headline Was: “OpenAI launches GPT-6 Cyber for vetted security testers”
- Our desk updated its story
OpenAI on Thursday introduced GPT-6 Cyber, a model it said is built to find and validate exploitable software flaws while remaining inside the scope security researchers set1,4.
The company said the model is initially available through its API and Codex to a select group of approved Daybreak Red customers, with access to expand to all Daybreak Red customers in coming weeks1,4.
OpenAI classified GPT-6 Cyber as Critical in cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework, up from High for GPT-5.6 Cyber1,4.
On ExploitGym, which tests whether a model can exploit a specified vulnerability, OpenAI said GPT-6 Cyber scored 48.5 percent, compared with 32.1 percent for GPT-5.6 Cyber1.
The company said GPT-6 Cyber also outperformed GPT-6 Astra on most cyber tasks it measured, including 40.3 percent recall on a web penetration-testing evaluation versus 32.0 percent for Astra1,3.
OpenAI said alignment training was a central focus, citing an ExploitGym Honeypot test informed by a prior Hugging Face incident1.
Without deployment safety prompts, it said GPT-6 Cyber avoided exploiting out-of-scope services in 99.93 percent of those tests, up from 94.49 percent for GPT-5.6 Cyber, and 100 percent with those prompts1.
The Verge summarized the same tests as the model going out of bounds less than 1 percent of the time, down from around 5 percent for GPT-5.6 Cyber2.
OpenAI said a vulnerability research campaign produced evidence for 81 novel Firefox issues Mozilla classified as high severity, and that the model developed working exploits for 948 Linux kernel vulnerabilities, more than five times the 166 it attributed to GPT-5.6 Sol on the same harness1,4.
CNA, citing OpenAI, said 588 of those Linux cases were previously unknown and that Mozilla has begun releasing Firefox fixes4.
The company said it is seeing more attempts to misuse AI, including by malicious cyber actors, and described extra monitoring, IP allowlisting for Daybreak Red, and blocks on high-risk activity involving critical systems1,4.
Independent verification of the benchmark scores, out-of-scope rates and vulnerability counts was not in the coverage reviewed1,2,4.
