iFixit teardown ties iPhone Duo hinge design to some cracked screens

The Verge reports that iFixit’s iPhone Duo teardown scored the foldable 5/10 for repairability and offered theories linking the hinge and an accordion cable to reported screen cracks.

Repair site iFixit has opened Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo, The Verge reported on Oct. 25, giving the phone a 5 out of 10 repairability score that the outlet said is the highest iFixit has assigned a foldable so far1.

The Verge said iFixit found that the inner screen’s matte nano-texture cover is meant to improve outdoor readability and to scatter reflections so the crease is less obvious1. Under a microscope, iFixit also described oval subpixels set at mixed angles that the site thinks reduce artifacts and further hide the fold1.

The nano-texture outer layer can be swapped without replacing the OLED underneath, according to The Verge’s account of the teardown, but repairing the display itself remains expensive and difficult, as with other foldables1. Dust reached the USB-C port, speaker grilles and hinge, making the hinge somewhat crunchy, The Verge said, though less of the glow dust seen in Samsung’s Z Fold8 and Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold made it inside the Duo1.

On reports of damaged screens and cracking hinges, The Verge said iFixit offered theories rather than a confirmed cause: the Duo hinge is highly complex and may not always descend fully, and an accordion cable that crosses that area near the battery edge could concentrate pressure, possibly behind the audible crack some owners have described1. The Verge said Apple did not immediately return a request for comment1.
