TSE count splits Brazil 13-13 as Lula leads nationally in runoff

The Rio Times, citing Brazil's electoral court, says President Lula led in 13 states and abroad and Flávio Bolsonaro in 13 states plus the capital district, with 99.96% of sections counted Sunday night.

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court count on Sunday night showed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ahead in 13 of 26 states and among voters abroad, and senator Flávio Bolsonaro ahead in 13 states and the Federal District, The Rio Times reported from official TSE files1.

The outlet said 99.96% of polling sections had been counted at 9:51 p.m. Brasília time (8:51 p.m. ET)1. The TSE had not declared a winner, according to the same report1.

Nationally, Lula led by about 4.4 million votes, 51.8% to 48.2%, The Rio Times said1. In the 2022 runoff Lula defeated then-president Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio's father, by 2,139,645 votes1.

Minas Gerais was the only state that changed sides between rounds, the report said1. On Oct. 4 Flávio led there 48.2% to 43.3%; in the runoff Lula led 50.40% to 49.60%, a margin of 99,621 votes1. Lula also won Minas Gerais narrowly in 20221.

Lula's highest shares were in the Northeast: Piauí 75.9%, Bahia 71.3%, Maranhão and Sergipe 69.5% each, and Pernambuco 69.2%1. He also led in Pará (55.0%), Amazonas (54.0%), Amapá (52.9%) and among voters abroad (53.6%, with 96.97% of overseas sections counted)1. The Northeast produced about 13.6 million net votes for Lula1.

Flávio's highest shares were in Roraima (72.5%), Rondônia (69.6%), Santa Catarina (69.4%), Acre (66.6%) and Mato Grosso (66.1%)1. The South gave him about 4.6 million net votes; the South, Southeast and Center-West together about 9.3 million1.

Lula's 13 states, per the report, were Alagoas, Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe1. Flávio led in Acre, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, Roraima, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Tocantins, plus the Federal District1.

The Rio Times account is a single-outlet reading of TSE files; an official winner and any remaining uncounted sections were not independently confirmed here1.
