Two helicopters collided Tuesday while trying to land at Pheriche, a village on the Everest trekking route in Nepal, killing an Indian tourist and injuring others, officials and the operators said1,4,5.

The crash was at about 08:15 local time (02:30 GMT), roughly 12 kilometers (7 miles) south of Everest Base Camp, BBC reported1. Al Jazeera put the village at about 4,200 meters (13,780 feet)4.

Fishtail Air named the man killed as Vasanth Kumar Balaramudu; Hindustan Times, citing a district official, gave the name as Vasanth Kumar Balaramaramadu, 47, of Chennai, and said he died at the scene1,5.

Fishtail Air said one of its helicopters was involved and that another passenger and the captain were injured; the injured were taken to Kathmandu1. RNZ identified the injured New Zealand passenger as Shailesh Krishan Patel, 53, of West Auckland, who said he was returning from Base Camp3.

Air Dynasty said its helicopter was carrying cargo and that its single crew member was unhurt1,3. Hindustan Times named two pilots among the injured, Rabindra Prajapati and Prajjwal KC5. Outlets differed on whether two or three people besides the dead tourist were hurt4,5,6.

Gyanendra Bhul of Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority said it appeared both aircraft tried to land at the same spot1. Solukhumbu chief development officer Kaman Singh Thapa Magar told Hindustan Times the weather was clear and a technical glitch appeared likely; police said an investigation is under way5.

Helicopters are widely used in the region because there are no roads, Al Jazeera and CBS News reported4,6. CBS News said a hotel fire at nearby Dingboche on Oct. 30 caused no reported deaths6.
