Apple published a MacBook Pro with a tandem OLED panel it calls PROLED XDR and on-screen Touch, pairing the machine with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips rather than the M6 silicon used in a separate 14-inch MacBook Pro1,5.
U.S. coverage put the touchscreen 14-inch model at $2,899 to start and the 16-inch at $3,399, with M5 Max configurations beginning at $4,499 and $4,7995,4.
Apple's page lists up to 1,000 nits sustained full-screen brightness, up to 2,000 nits peak, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, P3 plus Adobe RGB color, and ProMotion from 10 to 120Hz1,5.
Engadget reported the touch sensor is built into the display, which Apple said is meant to cut latency, and described scroll, pinch-to-zoom, finger drawing, wider touch menus and hiding the Dock2,1.
Ars Technica, writing from Los Angeles, said demonstration video showed people reaching up to a conventional clamshell, not a convertible 2-in-1, and that the 14-inch model is about 3 pounds, with a Dynamic Island camera cutout and a glowing lid logo5.
Apple said Touch can be used to sketch on screen, manipulate 3D objects, test iOS software in Xcode, and control tools in apps such as Logic Pro and Blender1.
TechCrunch and The Verge, citing MacRumors configurator figures, said a fully optioned 14-inch lists at $14,249 and a 16-inch at $14,549, both with an 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU M5 Max, 128GB of memory, nano-texture glass and 16TB of storage3,4.
The Verge said a prior fully specced 16-inch MacBook Pro topped out at $10,149 and that choosing 8TB instead of 16TB on the new 16-inch would land at $10,549, $400 above that predecessor4,3.
Ars Technica said this PROLED line keeps M5 Pro and M5 Max while other new Macs use M6, and that RAM still tops out at 128GB5,1.
IOL and The National covered a different M6 14-inch MacBook Pro and M6 iMac; IOL put that 14-inch at $1,999 in the U.S., and The National described M6 as a 2-nanometre chip with a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU7,9.
A day before the PROLED page, Techmeme pointed to Bloomberg reporting that Apple had discussed $2,899 for a 14-inch OLED XDR touch model with M5 Pro, $400 above the then-current M5 Pro machine8.
Ars Technica said preorders began with the announcement and that units reach buyers Nov. 6; TechCrunch said preorders open Oct. 30 with the same Nov. 6 availability5,3.
