The National Weather Service in Flagstaff issued a tornado warning at 3:34 p.m. MST (6:34 p.m. ET) Wednesday, Oct. 21, for parts of Apache and Navajo counties in eastern Arizona, set to expire at 4 p.m. MST (7 p.m. ET)1.
The agency said a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was near Wagon Wheel, or over Show Low, moving northeast at 50 mph1. It said the warning was based on radar-indicated rotation and listed a tornado and ping pong ball-size hail as hazards1.
Places in the warning area include Show Low, Taylor, Pinetop-Lakeside, Linden, Vernon and Show Low Regional Airport, along with stretches of State Route 260, Highway 60, State Route 61 and State Route 77, the agency said1.
The weather service warned that "flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter" and said mobile homes would be damaged or destroyed1. It told people to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a well-built building, away from windows1.
Earlier Wednesday the weather service had put Coconino, Yavapai, Mohave and Navajo counties under a tornado watch until 6 p.m., Phoenix station 12News reported2.
