Google says Suncatcher prototype is online after in-orbit AI tests
TechCrunch reports Google's Project Suncatcher prototype is communicating from orbit and ran a Gemma 4 prompt this week; Google's Oct. 1 blog confirmed contact after the Transporter-18 launch.
- Google and KPBS are now reporting this
- New headline Was: “Google’s first data center satellite is online and writing poetry”
- Our desk filed its story
Google's Project Suncatcher prototype is communicating from orbit after launching earlier this month on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare with more than 100 other spacecraft, TechCrunch reported Friday1. Google said on Oct. 1 that the Planet-built satellite launched on Transporter-18, that the company had confirmed contact, and that it was operating as expected2.
TechCrunch said engineers finished about three weeks of commissioning and this week sent a first prompt to a Google DeepMind Gemma 4 model pre-loaded on the satellite1. A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch the satellite was operating nominally1. Google's Oct. 1 blog post did not describe that prompt or name Gemma 42.
Chip count and run time are not settled across outlets. TechCrunch said the satellite carries a single Google Tensor Processing Unit, generates up to 1 kilowatt, and can run the chip about 20 minutes at a time1. KPBS, carrying NPR's Oct. 1 launch report, described four TPUs and Gemma runs of about 15 minutes because of heat limits4. Google's Oct. 1 blog did not state a chip count or a duty cycle2.
Google said the flight is meant to collect data on how TPUs handle launch stress, radiation and thermal extremes in orbit2. TechCrunch said ground tests in particle accelerators had suggested radiation would matter less for inference than for training, and that the campaign will look at thermal stress and bit flips that can corrupt stored data1.
If this test goes well, TechCrunch said Google's next step is two more chip-equipped satellites in 2027 with higher power and inter-satellite optical links1. Google's Sept. 24 facts post said future missions aim to link satellite clusters using high-bandwidth lasers and described a scale-up by 20275.
The program is Project Suncatcher. Broader claims in TechCrunch about Starship flight rates, 2030s economics, and other companies' orbital-compute plans are not independently restated here1.
