Railway says intruder may have decrypted some customer secrets, pauses all deployments

Cloud host Railway said on Oct. 21 that an unauthorized party may have accessed encrypted customer environment variables and decrypted some of them, and told all users to rotate their keys while deployments stay paused.

Railway, a cloud platform developers use to deploy apps, said on Wednesday, Oct. 21, that it detected unusual activity that morning in systems that store customer environment variables1.

The company said its investigation so far indicates an unauthorized third party may have accessed encrypted environment variables and, for some of them, obtained the decrypted contents1. Those variables can hold secrets such as API keys and database or registry credentials1.

Railway said it believes the incident is part of a recent series of attacks on platform companies aimed at compromising AI inference providers, and that it asked those upstream providers to revoke keys proactively1. It did not name the providers or say who it believes is behind the attacks1.

The company said its early analysis suggests a subset of users may be affected, but it recommended that every user rotate all environment variables, API keys and private registry credentials stored on Railway and check service logs for unusual activity1,2. It said it will email customers once it confirms their accounts were affected1.

All deployments are paused during the investigation, including for Enterprise customers, so users cannot ship new versions1,2. At 22:37 UTC (6:37 p.m. ET), Railway said it was rotating all of its storage bucket credentials and that new credentials would appear in dashboards automatically, though services cannot be redeployed to use them until builds return2.

The status page shows the day began with a platform outage: Railway reported backend problems at 09:28 UTC and said at 11:33 UTC that its dashboard, API and command-line tool were unavailable2. Later in the day it said it was invalidating login sessions because of impact on adjacent cache systems, signing some users out2.

Railway has not said how many accounts were affected, how the intruder got in, or when builds will resume1,2. It said it will post updates on its blog and status page as it narrows the scope1.
