Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said Friday the company will wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas Gigafactory around the middle of 2027 to make room for more Cybercab output5,6,13.

Austin is the only Tesla plant known to assemble the stainless-steel pickup and its specialized parts; Musk did not say whether production would move elsewhere5,3,1.

Deliveries began in late 2023. Kelley Blue Book figures carried by Reuters put U.S. sales at 20,237 last year, down from 38,965 in 2024, against Musk's earlier forecast of about 250,000 a year1,6.

The Verge cited analyst estimates of roughly 70,000 deliveries since launch; Engadget cited about 71,0005,3.

Musk, answering a user on X, called the Cybertruck the best vehicle Tesla has ever made and the wind-down the end of an era, Reuters reported1.

Tesla has been operating Cybercab robotaxis in Austin and has said it plans to add Dallas later this month, with Model Y robotaxis already in several U.S. cities6.

TechCrunch noted Tesla earlier this year ended Model S and Model X production to free factory space for Optimus humanoid robots6.

Tesla did not immediately comment to Reuters outside business hours; whether the Cybertruck continues at another plant after mid-2027 is unknown1,5.

The stainless-steel pickup was unveiled in 2019 with a promised starting price under $40,000 and up to 500 miles of range; neither figure was met when deliveries began, TechCrunch and Engadget reported6,3.

Former Aston Martin chief Andy Palmer told Reuters it does not make sense to keep a product that is missing targets1.

Analyst Felipe Munoz said electric pickups from Ford and others have also sold poorly in the United States, arguing the segment, not only Cybertruck styling, has lagged1.

Engadget noted a U.S. federal investigation involving the Cybercab and Tesla's long-running autonomy claims; those inquiries are separate from the production timetable Musk described3.
