A gunman drove a sedan through a fence into an outdoor lunch area at a Citibank office campus in the Tampa area on Wednesday, fatally shot a woman, and was then shot by a Citibank security guard during an exchange of gunfire in a cafeteria, Hillsborough County officials said1,2,10.
Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Frank Losat said authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting around 12:11 p.m.2,10. The Tampa Bay Times reported deputies arrived about a minute later and that Losat said the suspect was shot by the security guard at 12:13 p.m.10. The suspect was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, Losat said2.
Losat said the suspect crashed into outdoor seating where people were having lunch, then got out with a rifle2. "Upon the car coming to rest, the suspect exits the vehicle with a rifle, approaches the female, and she is shot," Losat said2. The victim's name was not released pending identification and next-of-kin notification2,10.
Four people were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening; officials said it was not yet clear whether they were struck by the vehicle or otherwise hurt2,10,12. About 3,200 Citibank employees were on the property at the time2,10.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said earlier Wednesday, based on preliminary information, that officials believed the episode was targeted2. At the later briefing, Losat said investigators still had to work through details, including whether the suspect and the slain woman knew each other, and that information could change2,12.
The Tampa Bay Times said 367 Hillsborough sheriff's deputies responded and that clearing the sprawling Sabal Park campus took about 2 1/2 hours10. An emergency alert later said the suspect was no longer an active threat and lifted a shelter-in-place order while urging the public to avoid the area10. Hillsborough Community College's nearby Brandon campus was locked down and later given an all-clear, a college spokesperson told the Times10.
Katie Doshi, Citi's director of corporate communications, said the company was aware of an incident at its Tampa site and was coordinating with law enforcement10. The Times said the campus has occupied land near East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Interstate 75 since 1998 and has more than 10,000 employees overall10.
Losat said the crime scene was large and could be processed into Thursday, with interviews of witnesses continuing well into the night2. ABC News reported that a law enforcement source said ATF agents would respond2. Names of the gunman and the slain woman had not been released2,12.
