Trojanized Claude Code extension hit Cursor marketplace, researchers say
The Hacker News and Phorion say a backdoored Claude Code VS Code extension, version 2.1.313, was distributed via Cursor’s marketplace and tried to install an SSH backdoor.

A trojanized copy of Anthropic’s official Claude Code VS Code extension was distributed through Cursor’s extension marketplace as version 2.1.313, according to The Hacker News and a Phorion advisory published Friday2,3.
Cursor said the incident involved a modified Claude Code extension on its marketplace and affected at most 5,000 users, and that it temporarily shut the marketplace to remove the package2. The company said the malicious version was not developed by Anthropic2. The Hacker News said attackers still shipped it under Anthropic’s legitimate extension ID, anthropic.claude-code2.
OpenSourceMalware co-founder Jenn Gile told The Hacker News the bundle “identifies itself as anthropic.claude-code version 2.1.313” with a malicious 66-line loader ahead of the real code2.
The Hacker News said there was no evidence the same update reached Open VSX or Microsoft’s VS Code Marketplace, and that as of Oct. 30 Anthropic had published version 2.1.314 on those stores2. How the unauthorized update was introduced remains unclear in the reporting2.
Phorion said the injected JavaScript runs as soon as Node loads the file, before the extension’s activate callback, and tries to append an attacker Ed25519 public key, labeled svc-telemetry, to the user’s authorized_keys file3. It then tries to enable SSH on Linux, macOS, and Windows without a privilege-escalation exploit, so service start often fails without existing admin rights2,3.
Phorion said the implant opens a reverse SSH tunnel to 134.209.82.225 and posts a host-reconnaissance beacon in plaintext HTTP to that address on port 80993. Persistence includes a user LaunchAgent named com.apple.sysmond.plist on macOS, an @reboot crontab on Linux, and a SysMon scheduled task or Startup-folder script on Windows3.
On macOS, Phorion said a check of Remote Login as a normal user often fails in a way that skips enabling SSH, which can break inbound access if Remote Login was not already on, while keys and persistence are still dropped3. The firm said uninstalling the extension alone does not remove those artifacts3.

Where they agree
- Version 2.1.313 of anthropic.claude-code on Cursor’s marketplace contained injected code that tried to plant an SSH backdoor.
- Cursor removed the package; the payload targeted SSH keys, a reverse tunnel, and persistence on multiple operating systems.
