Apple on Tuesday announced a 14-inch MacBook Pro using its M6 chip, saying the laptop can be pre-ordered beginning Oct. 28 and will be available starting Nov. 61,2.
The company said M6 has a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, a dual 16-core Neural Engine, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and up to 24 hours of battery life1,2. Apple said graphics performance is up to 30 percent faster and on-device AI workloads up to 25 percent faster than M51,3.
TechCrunch, Ars Technica, Engadget and The Verge reported the 14-inch model starts at $1,999, matching last year's M5 starting price, with 16GB of unified memory standard and configuration up to 32GB2,3,4,5. Apple's India newsroom release described colors as space black and silver and did not state a dollar price in the text reviewed1.
Apple also announced a 24-inch iMac with M6, TechCrunch and Ars Technica reported, starting at $1,4992,3. Ars Technica said the iMac skipped M5 after an M4 generation and offers a 10-core two-Thunderbolt configuration or a 12-core four-Thunderbolt configuration3.
Ars Technica and The Verge said M6 first shipped in the Mac mini, and that the new MacBook Pro and iMac keep the previous designs3,5. The Verge said the entry-level 14-inch model now includes Apple's N1 wireless chip, previously on M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations5.
Engadget said the 16-inch MacBook Pro still uses M5 Pro or M5 Max4. The Verge said upgrades to 2TB or 4TB storage cost more than last year, citing a memory shortage5. Engadget listed 2TB as $500 extra and 4TB as $1,500 extra, with a $150 nano-texture display option4.
Shelly Goldberg, Apple's vice president of Hardware Engineering, said the M6 chip takes performance "to the next level, with a boost in CPU speed and graphics"1. The National placed the refresh before Apple's Pro and Tell event and an expected touchscreen MacBook, which Apple's MacBook Pro release did not announce6,1.
Independent reviews of the new 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac were not in the coverage. Apple's performance figures are company tests, not third-party benchmarks1.
