A 71-year-old man died after being struck on westbound Interstate 80 in Vallejo, Calif., early Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said, and the Tesla's driver told officers the car was in Full Self-Driving mode1,2,3,4.
CHP said officers responded around 2:30 to 2:35 a.m. near the Interstate 780 interchange and found the man's injuries fatal2,3,4. The driver, described as a 26-year-old man from San Francisco, stayed at the scene and provided dashcam video2,3,4.
A preliminary review of that video, CHP said, showed the Tesla traveling about 70 mph in the second lane when the man walked from the right shoulder toward the center divide and into the car's path3. CHP said the footage showed brakes applied and a steer to the left; the right front of the Tesla still struck him1,3.
Authorities said it appeared at least one other vehicle then hit the pedestrian in the travel lanes after he was already down; no other drivers stopped, and CHP said it did not know those drivers' identities1,3,4. The Solano Area office asked witnesses to contact investigators1,3,4.
The Verge, citing the San Francisco Chronicle, also noted a separate I-80 incident last week in which a driver said he had been asleep using Full Self-Driving when the Tesla hit a stopped police car; CHP then warned that the feature is not fully autonomous and does not remove the driver's duty to operate the vehicle safely1. Tesla's response to Thursday's crash was not reported in the outlets reviewed.
Scott Heitman, a CHP spokesperson, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the Tesla driver was not cited after the crash and could face charges if the investigation finds negligence, SFGATE reported4.
CHP said the crash remains under investigation. The pedestrian's name had not been released in the reports reviewed.
ABC7 News Bay Area later reported a separate Thursday evening crash on Interstate 280 in Los Altos, where CHP said a northbound driver crossed into southbound lanes, two drivers died and a third person was hospitalized; that collision is not the Vallejo I-80 Tesla case7.
