Democrats won majorities in the U.S. House and Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections, according to reporting Wednesday from Ohio Capital Journal, Deutsche Welle, The Hill and AS USA, which cited different tallies as races remained uncalled1,2,3,4.

Ohio Capital Journal, carrying a States Newsroom Washington dispatch, said Democrats held 53 Senate seats and that a House majority was all but certain, without publishing a final House seat total1. Deutsche Welle, which said it follows Associated Press calls, reported that Democrats had crossed 51 Senate seats and 218 House seats and thereby flipped both chambers from Republican control2.

AS USA, citing AP running counts, said Democrats had 224 House seats to Republicans’ 134, with 78 House races still uncalled, and that Democrats or independents who caucus with them held 54 Senate seats, with four Senate races still uncalled4. The Hill, citing Decision Desk HQ as of 3 a.m. Eastern, said that service expected Democrats to finish with about 258 House seats and 55 Senate seats as more results arrived3.

The States Newsroom copy listed Democratic Senate pickups in Iowa, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio and Texas, plus an open North Carolina seat left by retiring Republican Thom Tillis, and said Democrats held Minnesota by electing Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan1. Deutsche Welle named Senate flips in North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, Texas and Iowa2. The Hill additionally reported Democrat Troy Jackson defeating Sen. Susan Collins in Maine and James Talarico defeating Ken Paxton for a Texas Senate seat3.

Ohio Capital Journal said Democrats had netted 16 House seats by just past midnight and that the Associated Press had not called Democratic control of the House by midnight1. Later accounts from Deutsche Welle and AS USA said Democrats had crossed the 218-seat House threshold2,4.

Ohio Capital Journal and The Hill both reported Democratic gubernatorial flips in Georgia, Texas, Ohio and Iowa, and The Hill said Republicans had not flipped any Democratic-held governorships in the results it reviewed1,3. The Hill said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was in position to become speaker3.

AS USA attributed a Truth Social post to President Donald Trump saying he was not on the ballot4. The Hill said the results would leave Trump dealing with Democratic majorities for the rest of his term and would make legislation harder without Democratic votes3.

Seat totals still differed by source and by hour because many races had not been called1,3,4. Certified national totals were not in the copy reviewed.
