Debian developer says he will stop NEW uploads over LLM reviews
Debian Developer Johannes Schauer Marin Rodrigues said he will not upload packages to NEW until he can opt out of automated LLM reviews of those uploads.
- lists.debian.org is now reporting this
- New headline Was: “I will no longer upload to NEW”
- Our desk filed its story
Debian Developer Johannes Schauer Marin Rodrigues said Monday he will no longer upload packages to Debian's NEW queue unless he can opt out of automated large language model reviews of those uploads1.
Writing to the debian-devel mailing list, he said others had shown him that NEW queue processing now appears to send his uploads through an LLM without an announcement1.
He quoted review language stating the output is an LLM-based review using a Debian Inference workflow, was not written or checked by a member of the DFSG team, and is not a decision on the package1.
Schauer Marin Rodrigues said he will not read the machine-generated output and that generating it without his consent is not responsible use under Debian's last general resolution on generative AI1.
He argued that if a central team uses an LLM on all NEW uploads, that looks like project endorsement, contrary to the GR text that Debian neither endorses nor prohibits generative AI1.
The same GR, he wrote, says large-scale or automated project actions should have prior discussion and consensus; he asked where that discussion happened for LLM screening of NEW1.
He said he would rather wait a year for NEW processing than have uploads automatically screened without consent, and that he prefers a default of no LLM review with an explicit opt-in1.
He said he is not leaving the project but will leave NEW uploads to others who accept the consequences1.
The mailing list post did not include a reply from the DFSG team in the original message; follow-up posts appeared on the thread after it was sent1.
